The Government of India has unveiled one of the most ambitious projects, 'Smart City Mission', with an aim to improve the quality of life of people by enabling... local area development and harnessing smart technologies. Under this mission, Gandhinagar has been shortlisted as one of the potential smart cities of India out of 100 cities announced by the Government of India.
A total of 20 cities were shortlisted in the first round in 2015-16 and 23 more were chosen for fast track. The remaining cities were required to prepare "Smart City Proposal for Round – 2" (SCP) as they were given a second chance to be in the list of Smart Cities in the year 2016-17. Cities will prepare SCPs using the principles of strategic planning process and the proposal will contain Areas Based Development Plans which would include retrofitting or redevelopment or Greenfield plans and also Pan City Initiative with application of smart solutions based on the feedback provided by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD). Area Based Development will transform existing areas into planned ones, thereby improving the livability of the whole city whereas smart solutions will enable cities to use technology, information and data to improve city infrastructure and services. A city wide consultation with all the city residents, various stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts was proposed by the State Government to include the aspirations of the citizens and come up with a collaboration vision for future course of development of the city.
